Summary on Grant Application Form
We seek to develop novel optical sensor instrumentation to characterise multi-constituent liquid and multi-phase spray systems and related mixing phenomena. The premise of the proposed research stems from the need to understand the detailed interaction between a gasoline direct injection (GDI) spray and the gas phase in order to generate improved designs. Similar requirements exist in microfluidic systems, specifically multi-constituent mixers. Simultaneous velocimetry and particle size data will be obtained across a full field - information that cannot be obtained using current techniques. The technology to be developed is generic as exemplified by the macro and micro fluidic applications to be studied.
