Summary on Grant Application Form
Design requirements for increasing thrust and efficiency of advanced turbine engines has resulted in a need to extend the temperature capability of existing turbine engine materials. Currently, ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBC) are specially applied to high pressure turbine blades to maintain acceptable metal substrate temperatures during operation. Development of new coating compatible single crystal Ni-base superalloy compositions with a 30 C temperature improvement over exisiting alloys will enable turbine engines to operate more efficiently with higher operating temperatures. Research activities at the University of Cambridge will focus on developing an alloy composition optimised for high-temperature mechanical properties, alloy stability and TBC coating compatibility. In addition to constitutive models describing the deformation behaviour of the single crystal substrate at various temperatures and loading conditions, models will also be developed to accurately assess substrate/coating interactions and precipitation of topologically-close-packed (TCP) phases at elevated temperatures.
