The proposed research is directed towards the development and application of a scanning confocal optical microscope for high resolution investigations of semiconductor systems at cryogenic temperatures. The construction of the low-temperature microscope will be based around the investigator's equipment for low-temperature scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) - a large sample space liquid helium optical access cryostat and, in the initial stages of the grant period, the SNOM insert itself for high resolution low-temperature scanning. A confocal arrangement will be implemented for illumination and collection of light from the sample, with the use of solid immersion lenses also investigated for further improved resolution. A scheme for high-resolution imaging will be employed by scanning the confocal source/detector, externally to the cryostat, in conjunction with a low-temperature focussing and coarse positioning stage inside the cryostat (to be constructed and commissioned during the first 18 months of the grant period). The low-temperature scanning confocal microscope will be applied to the study of doped GaAs/AIGaAs reactive-ion etched quantum wires, annealed InAs/GaAs quantum dots (a I=TIR spectrometer will be used for the measurement of unanealed samples with longer wavelength emission) and defects in polycrystalline CVD and irradiated diamond.
