We have recently developed a magnetization measurement technique named ballistic Hall micromagnetometry capable of measuring minor distortions in magnetic field around submicron and rim-sized objects. The technique has a resolution of about 10-' of one flux quantum, which is sufficient to detect switching of just 1000 electron spins in a submicron system. This extraordinary sensitivity allows one to employ the technique for studies of a great variety of mesoscopic systems and phenomena, where the technique can provide unique information and new insights. However, many prospective applications of the technique have so far been hindered by the lack of instruments for placing individual nanoobjects of interest into the sensitive (submicron) area of magnetometers. This has limited the use of the technique to studies of submicron systems that could be placed into the area via evaporation and lithographical procedures only. The requested equipment will allow an alternative method of positioning, so that in future the magnetometry can be applied to other rim-sized systems and on an ad-hoc basis. The equipment will be used by the applicant for research on mesoscopic superconductivity and shared with collaborating groups from the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Sciences and Biological Sciences for studies of quantum molecular magnets, ferromagnetic nano articles, data storage devices and individual livin cells.
