Fast ferries operating in restricted waters produce unnatural, long period, non-dispersive waves which can place people using both the shoreline and the water for recreational and commercial purposes at risk. These waves are particularly dangerous in calm weather as water can suddenly surge up a shoreline and breakers appear without warning. The objective of this programme of work is to study the nature of these wash waves by means of a series of physical model tests and field measurements to improve understanding of the physical processes taking place. This knowledge will enable the adaptation of existing mathematical models of waves in the coastal zone to describe the transformation of wash waves from the nearfield around the ship to the shoreline. The work provides an interface between parallel work on the numerical prediction of wash waves in the vicinity of the ship and the environmental impact on both marine life and coastal morphology. The methodology and models developed will be used to assess risk and optimise the operational procedures of fast ferries to reduce environmental impact and risk to people. The study will provide scientific information to enable statutory bodies to formulate appropriate regulations to limit risk.
