The proposed research is concerned with an investigation of the environmental impact of fast ferry wash on the reciprient fringing plant and animal benthic communities. Consideration will be given to investigating the direct effects of he wave wash on he biota as a result of the more frequent 'immersion' and increased mechanical stress, as well as the indirect effects associated with habitat disturbance, increased substrate mobility and sediment resuspension. Biotope mapping and sensitivity assessment will be undertaken for a wide range of benthic communities associated with some selected ferry routes in order to identify sensitive areas which are of particular importance. Ecological and experimental field studies, involving benthic surveys, and the use of test surfaces/transplantation techniques, will also be undertaken to provide both qualitative and quantitative data on the effects of wave wash on the recruitment, development and characteristics of the affected communities. Field and laboratory studies will further provide information about the contaminate loading of sediments (and selected marine organisms) associated with selected ferry routes, whilst a range of bioassay procedures will be employed to determine the effects of wave wash mobilised contaminants on various representative test organisms.
