Summary on Grant Application Form
The object of the proposed investigation is to establish numerical tools for the prediction of wave wash generated by high speed displacement ships. The investigation forms a part of a wider study within a foresight link project, covering the generation, propagation and impact of ship wave wash on safety and the environment. The proposed investigation will be carried out through a programme of theoretical work and model tests. The theoretical investigation will develop existing slender body (thin ship) theory for the prediction of the near field wave wash in a form suitable for input to wave transformation models. The theoretical methods will be validated and refined using an extensive programme of experimental work. This will entail tests on a variety of monohull and multi-hull configurations, up to super-critical speeds, using models and test tanks of different sizes. The developed methods will be used to provide input to the wider wash propagation and impact research programme, and to explore low wash hull configurations.
