The total monetary cost of fire and explosion (of losses and safety provision) in the UK is estimated at 5 billion per year or approximately 1 % of GDP. A complex and fast changing legislative framework and a move towards performance based standards, necessitate a fundamentally based scientific/engineering approach to fire and explosion protection design, of mufti- and inter- disciplinary nature. There is therefore a strong National need for high level training in this area.The Package aims to build on the existing provision of a new and fairly successful MSc in Fire and Explosion (20 students - 70% of whom are supported by Industry ) and provide the following academic qualifications on either full-time or part-time study1 MSc/PGDip/PGCert in Fire and Explosion Engineering2. MSc/PGDip/PGCert in Fire Engineering3. Ten taught modules will be available as high-level CPD courses4. Four of these modules will also be available as Distance Learning.There is significant industrial commitment to the package with some 42 organisations currently contributing to the delivery of the course. The EPSRC support over the next five years is crucial in bringing about the level of flexibility, quality of provision and industrial participation envisaged by the package.
