Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research will advance understanding of NLO-active organotransition metal complexes, improving the potential of such compounds for practical applications in optoelectronic and photonic devices. Such studies are timely because metal complexes continue to be largely overlooked as useful NLO materials, despite holding promise which is arguably greater than that of their purely organic counterparts. The bulk of the work will concern the synthesis and study of mixed-valent, pyridyl polyene and octopola ruthenium complexes and the measurement of their first molecular hyperpolarizabilities by using the recently developed hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) technique. An additional and highly important component comprises the preparation of electrode-deposited Langmuir-Blodgett thin films containing dipolar ruthenium ammine chromophores. These will exhibit redox-switchable quadratic NLO responses, and this will hence constitute a step towards the exploitation of our complexes in novel device applications.
