Our objectives to conduct novel research into the cognitive and control needs of the potential driving population, when much greater use of transport telematics is expected, to create assessment methods and design tools for mass production and custom-made vehicles, and to disseminate the results widely through the UK automotive supply chain so that they can be effectively exploited in the global vehicle market. The research is planned to complement existing work in the field.The research methodology chosen by this internationally respected consortium of research providers is traditional and conservative, minimising the risks of introducing this new technology to the vehicle user, and maximising the competitive advantage for UK automotive manufacturing industry. The programme is industry led to focus on market pull of telematic features which improve the quality of life and to avoid technology push and customer confusion with the attendant product rejection, a classic business process approach championed by the Innovative Manufacturing Initiative and an example of public-private partnerships in practice. It will be professionally managed by an SME and the research group in partnership.
