The aim of the research is to integrate time-phased and distributed tooling considerations within design and process planning. Such an integration will allow the application of objective and consistent tool related objectives during product development and result in more efficient tooling solutions and the moderation of product design in terms of tooling capability. An industrial survey will be performed to establish the tooling needs and priorities of the target industrial sectors namely, batch and high volume cellular manufacturers. The next phase will be to select a set of tooling functions which are important to industry and comprise tooling considerations both at design and process planning level. The selected functions will be implemented using object oriented techniques and will be linked with a proprietary design and manufacturing planning environment. An extended testing of the methods will follow using real data supplied by the industrial collaborators to allow the validation of the perceived industrial benefits for the target industrial sectors. The results of the research will be published in learned journals and conferences. The findings concerning industrial applicability and benefits will be disseminated to manufacturers and software vendors in order to promote the subsequent commercial exploitation of the research.
