Summary on Grant Application Form
Funds are requested to assist in the purchase of a Philips CM 200 transmission electron microscope with an SUTW EDX detector. This is a joint application between the Victorian University of Manchester and UMIST, who are both making substantial contributions towards the cost of the instrument. It involves 5 departments with the two institutions. The grant will initially be held by UMIST and then split in line with projected instrument demands of the two institutions, as UMIST 60% and 40% the Victorian University of Manchester. A new 200 kV analytical TEM is essential to the future of materials science research at Manchester because of our expanding research activity in the area of microstructural studies req light element chemical analysis and high-resolution. The microscopes advanced crystallograph capability will be used to develop new techniques for diffraction analysis. The instrument will be applied to a wide range of important problems in Metallic, Ceramic, Geological electro optic and polymeric materials concentrating on characterising phases with complex structures, and understanding phase transformations and deformation mechanisms in these materials.
