1. To apply the local damage mechanics approach to preduct how the onset and development ot tearing at the weld toe affects the ultimate strngth of tubular joints. 2. To investigate the effects of under/over matching weld metal strength and local brittle zones on ultimate strength of tubular joints. There is great interest in establishing a satisfactory design basis for ultimate strength of tubular joints, both cracked and uncracked. The great difficulty for uncracked joints is in predicting the stage at which tearing will start to develop and how it will proceed. Furthermore, the effects of scale and size, and of such factors of relative strengths of weld metal and parent material on initial tearing and subsequent strength are completely unknown. This project sets out to provide guidance in this area using the local damage mechanics approach through finite element analysis. The local approach provides a method of including criteria of failure by either ductile tearing or cleavage fracture into the finite element analysis, and has been pioneered for use in the nuclear industry. This is coupled to probabilistic assessments to allow estimates of variability. The theoretical estimates will be compared to existing databases of experimental results, and then applied to predict full scale behaviour.
