Localised excitations in nonlinear discrete systems are described, as a rule, by non-integrable equations, and their study demands extensive numerics. The aim of this proposal is to follow an alternative route, exploiting the existence of integrable discretizations of continuous soliton equations as a starting point for the study of their non-integrable generalizations. The proposed research is aimed to extend, as far as possible, the applicability of analytical methods to study dynamics of solitons in near-integrable nonlinear discrete systems which approximate actual physical situations. These techniques and their results will be corroborated with numerical simulations. The findings will be placed in the context of currently existing and/or feasible experimental settings and definitive predictions will be made that can be verified/tested in such setups.
