Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project is a collaboration within the University of Southampton between the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and the Centre for Enterprise and Innovation (CEI). Its objective is to turn a new and improved fabrication method for specialty glass into a commercial proposition. With the funding provided, along with the additional in-kind support provided by the ORC and CEI we will further develop our proof-of-concept to the stage at which the route to commercialization is clear. Over a one year time frame, we expect to be in a position which will allow us to secure funding for an appropriate spin-out company or licensing opportunity.Technically, we will achieve improvements in purity, efficiency and quantity of the glass produced, bringing our material to the standard required for a commercial product. This will be achieved with a focussed man-year of effort by scientists with a track record for process development and producing high purity glasses. These scientists will work closely with a Business Manager provided by the CEI at no cost to the project to meet the commercial objectives of the project. The commercial objectives will gather the information and personal contacts necessary for the preparation of a focussed and successful business plan.
