Summary on Grant Application Form
Jones is a researcher of international standing in Human Computer Interaction, particularly in the field of mobile, personal and ubiquitous computing. Over the past 2 years (2002 & 2003), he has made short, 1 month visits to UCLIC to work with staff and student on projects, facilitate research activity and to disseminate research ideas and best practice. The purpose of this longer visit is to consolidate on the groundwork, leading to a set of concrete, useful outputs. We will work with Jones to extend and apply the more relaxed, calmer, laid-back style of interacting with computers his team is developing. While Jones has focussed on the use of handheld computers, we see further possibilities in domain areas we are actively involved in: for instance, in-car systems, hospital information systems and interactive TV. In New Zealand, Jones is the co-leader of the newly forming Govemment/Universities/Industry consortium for Next Generation Mobile Devices and Services as well as being on the board of advisors for the Unwired World research platform within Medialab SouthPacific (see www.medialab.co.nz). We will learn from his experiences in being involved in establishing these research infrastructures and consider further formalising our involvement. Jones has good mentoring skills and will employ these in meetings and workshops with new researchers both in UCLIC and other UK institutions. Jones will also visit several other key institutions and provide an objective overview (for all these groups) of the current state-of-art in HCI and mobile, personal and ubiquitous computing in the UK.
