Summary on Grant Application Form
The Global Grid Forum (GGF) has recognized shortcomings of Globus Toolkit Version 2 and started the definition of next-generation grid middleware by extending the emerging web services technology . The Open Grid Services Infrastructure (OGSI) extends web services with stateful services, asynchronous notification, references to service instances, collections of service instances etc needed in e-science and provides the basis for the definition of higher-level services, such as workflow, data access and integration, monitoring, payment, that are part of the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA). Globus Toolkit 3, the first stable implementation of OGSI has been released earlier this month. Previous versions of GT3 have been used by UK e-science projects both to build applications (e.g. in the Polymorph Simulation, myGrid and AstroGrid projects) and to build early versions of OGSA services. This project will roll out GT3 OGSI implementations, as well as the first UK grid services (data access and integration, notification, workflow) in an incremental manner to a total of nine sites to form the experimental UK OGSA Grid. It will support a pilot project (Materials Simulation) to deploy an application across the UK OGSA Grid and report the experience to pave the way for a production-strength deployment of OGSA in the UK.
