This Platform Grant-supported research will significantly progress two complementary and productive research approaches at UCL Interaction Centre, which develop the science and understanding of complex information systems that are reliable, usable and fit well in the context of use. The first will investigate selected contexts of use (e.g., news reporting, primary care, manufacturing) and their detailed information requirements, and developing and evaluating systems that provide a good fit with user needs in context. This recognises the limitations of generic information systems, and focuses on particular domains of application and use. The second will develop and evaluate formal theories and tools that support the design and evaluation of complex information systems. Such tools will be made available to other researchers and practitioners. The two broad approaches provide complementary, equally important, perspectives on the quality of interaction. As well as pursuing the centre's particular research agenda, workshops and meetings will be organised to facilitate productive interactions and collaborations across the UK HCI research and practitioner communities
