The proposed project, to be funded for twelve months under the 'Postdoctoral Mobility' scheme, will initiate a formal interdisciplinary collaboration between the fields of applied engineering acoustics and theoretical physics. The postdoctoral researcher has recently been supported by EPSRC grant no. GR/N32471, 'Development of Acoustic Pulse Reflectometry for use in Manufacturing Industry', under Dr David Sharp of the Open University. She now proposes to work with Prof. Roy Pike of King's College London on the mathematical development of more robust and efficient algorithms for solution of the inverse problem of non-invasive measurement of acoustical ducts. The main feature of the proposed research is that it exploits the littleknown 'acoustical Klein-Gordon' equation, which has similarities to the Schroedinger equation of quantum mechanics. Mathematical advances in this field can now be applied to acoustics, and it is predicted that more accurate results will be achieved from the higher bandwidths and spatial resolutions allowed by the wave-mechanical model. The results are of relevance in general engineering, for the monitoring of blocks and leakages in ducts, in musical acoustics, including the examination of historical instruments, and in speech acoustics and technology, for the compact parameterisation of the speech wave.
