Recent experimental advances have led to a huge increase in the amount of genetic data being generated, from genome sequences to population surveys of DNA variation. The need to interpret such data in terms of underlying evolutionary processes has stimulated important developments in mathematical genetics, particularly in the twin fields of modelling the ancestral process relating samples of chromosomes from populations, and of statistical methods of inference from empirical data.It is proposed to hold a 10-day symposium in the area of Mathematical Genetics at the University of Durham, organised by R.C. Griffiths (Oxford) and G. McVean (Oxford).The symposium will concentrate on new developments in three principal topics: Models of evolution, Population genetic inference, and Human genetics.
