Abstract. In a recent article (Roberts & Vivaldi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 No. 3 (2003) 034102]), measure-preserving rational maps of the plane were reduced over finite fields, in order to study the question of integrability in a finite arithmetical setting. In this novel approach, arithmetical techniques centered on the Hasse-Weil bound for points on algebraic turves provide strong indication of the existence of an integral of the motion and form the basis for the study of integrability in finite systems. We wish to carry this investigation further, and analyze the asymptotic distribution of the periods in the integrable and nonintegrable case.We seek support for two research visits, combining a Visiting Fellowship with an Overseas Travel Grant scheme.
