Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposals seeks partial support for the First International Conference on Appliance Design (lAD) to be held at HP laboratories in Bristol, 6-8 May 2003. The event builds on the development of an EPSRC-funded network in this area (EPSRC grant GR/N39166/O1) which has been publishing the journal Appliance Design (http://www.appliancedesign.org) for the last 12 months, disseminating the latest thinking on appliances through the business and academic communities worldwide. The new and emerging area of appliance design is focused on the development of devices which resemble home appliances in their narrow range of function and ease of use, but resemble computing devices in that they deal with information-based tasks.
