Summary on Grant Application Form
Lasers continue to be essential research tools in a wide range of scientific disciplines. The Laser Loan Pool supports all aspects of such work by providing a variety of modern laser systems to researchers to use at their home institutions. The application is supported by 50 UK researchers who give brief scientific cases and letters indicating the high quality and broad range of science that will be maintained through this programme. These cases fall across all the EPSRC programme areas with topics ranging from medical multi-photon imaging, acoustic wave studies, fundamental molecular dynamics, THz source development, surface studies, semiconductor physics, materials, photonics, cluster studies and biochemisty. It is proposed that the operation of the Laser Loan Pool is continued by the Lasers for Science Facility (LSF) on behalf of the UK research community and EPSRC. The LSF will provide the continuity, professional backup, service and development of the Loan Pool. The allocation of lasers will continue to be made by the established peer review process.
