Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to provide international travel money for a single visit incorporating two world leading centres in acoustic wave applications to gas and liquid phase sensing. Sandia National Laboratories (New Mexico, USA) is a leading US government research agency which has specific experimental expertise in surface acoustic wave applications to sensors. Most recently they have become interested in applications of Love wave sensors, the theory of which the Principal Applicant has significant expertise; discussions will also incorporate predictions of a new layer guided acoustic plate mode sensor. The visit to Sandia will therefore provide an opportunity for an in-depth discussion on possible UK-USA collaboration in these areas. During the same visit, the Principal Applicant will visit Professor Thompson at the University of Toronto and Dr Hayward at the University of Guelph (Canada). Professor Thompson is regarded as one of the founders of the field of quartz crystal microbalance applications in biosensors; this was part of his citation when appointed as an FRS of Canada. The visit to Toronto will discuss the influence of surface wettability and interfacial layers of water on quartz crystal response and is intended to lay the foundation for future collaborations and possibly an EU/Canada collaboration. The Principal Applicant will gain considerably from discussions, and possibly collaboration, with internationally acknowledged world leaders in the acoustic wave sensor field.
