Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal combines cereal chemistry, process engineering and biotechnology to elaborate a novel and low processing route from cereal grains to biodegradable PHB. Recently developed debranning technology will be advanced into a general tool for the separation of value-added components from a wide range of cereals. Continuous bioprocess using a fungal consortium and the autolysis of this consortium will form the foundation for the production of a generic feedstock from cereal grains, grain processing co-products, and wastes. The application of this feedstock as a complete medium for bacterial and yeast cultivation will produce many existing chemicals at significantly reduced costs. I specifically, the production of PHB via this step-changing process will be demonstrated. The superior hydrolytic and activities of the fungal consortium will ensure that the processing route produces a minimum of waste.
