Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal presents a focused program of research aimed at studying the properties of metal nanoparticle aggregates in LC colloids. Previous experimental and theoretical studies suggest these interactions will result in the formation of linear aggregates, like pearls on a necklace, with an interparticle spacing that can be adjusted by the field. The combination of ordered aggregates and near-field coupling between nanoparticles is expected to result in novel optical properties, including polarisation-dependent absorption, and voltage-dependent colour. The prospect of totally new electro-optic effects based on the switchable optical properties of colloids formed by gold nanoparticles in liquid crystals offers exciting possibilities for novel electro-optic switching modes for application in both displays and telecommunications. The proposal will bring Visiting Fellow Prof. David Patrick to Oxford for a 10-month stay to work together with the Principle Investigators, enabling a synergistic collaboration building upon the complementary expertise of all parties.
