Summary on Grant Application Form |
During the manufacture of steel components at high temperature the surface quality of the finished product depends on the oxide scales and the ability of the manufacturer to remove them after hot forming. Scale properties are also of interest because of the effect on friction and heat transfer during hot working operations and the resultant wear of tooling or work rolls. The aim of the project is to increase the understanding of how steel oxide scale microstructures develop, and how alloying of the steel and the processing conditions affect this microstructure and the associated mechanical properties. This will be achieved by growing oxides under controlled laboratory conditions varying the substrate surface finish, oxidation temperatures and time and the environmental conditions. The effect of alloying elements in the steel, in particular silicon and nickel, on the development of oxide scale microstructures will also be investigated. Optical microscopy, Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis will be used to characterise the scale microstructures. These microstructures will be related to the mechanical properties of the scale using standard testing techniques.
