Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the accurate measurement of crystallographic texture of metal sheet and thin plate using new non-contact wideband ultrasound techniques. The current method of measuring texture is to produce X-ray pole figures, where a single X-ray pole figure measurement takes in excess of one hour to perform on a small section cut from the strip. Pole figure analysis does not have the potential for use as an on-line measurement technique. This project proposes to develop a non-contact ultrasonic texture measurement system with an operating time of seconds that has the potential for implementation as an on-fete system but will also be of significant benefit to materials characterisation in the laboratory. The ultrasonic texture data will be correlated with X-ray pole figure measurements in order to calibrate the system, however, the technique has potential to provide valuable additional information (residual stress, microstructure) that will be investigated in this work. The relationship between the ultrasound texture data and formability will also be determined by performing destructive plastic tests.
