Summary on Grant Application Form
Algebraic Geometry over Groups is a new concept in the theory of abstract infinite groups that bears a surprising similarity to algebraic geometry - hence its name. Over the past 4 years or so, the foundations of this new theory have been laid by a number of leading specialists in the field of abstract infinite groups, but its development is still in progress. In our joint paper On the quasivariety generated by a non-cyclic free metabelian group , Remeslennikov and I obtained various characterizations of the finitely generated groups in the quasivariety featuring in the title. Apart from the intrinsic interest as a contribution to the theory of free metabelian groups, the relevance of these results with a view to algebraic geometry over groups lies in the fact that these groups are precisely the coordinate groups of algebraic sets over free metabelian groups. We believe that our results provide an excellent starting point for further investigations aimed at a satisfactory characterization of algebraic sets over free metabelian groups and other finitely generated metabelian groups. The latter is the main objective of the proposed visit.
