The unique physical, and in particular electronic, properties of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) indicate that use of these materials may represent a significant step forward in the development of future nanotechnologies. However, successful incorporation of SWNTs into nanometre scale structures requires an explicit consideration of the perturbation of SWNT properties brought about by the close proximity of the other components of the structure, and the effects of exposure to ambient conditions. The presence of substrate, electrodes, dopants and adsorbates from ambient atmosphere may strongly influence the electronic structure of a nanotube and thus the behaviour of any electronic device derived from it. The proposed programme of research is designed to address these issues in a systematic fashion. A number of carefully selected model nanotube/substrate/co-adsorbate systems will be studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy as a local probe of both electronic and topographic structure. The choice of model systems is designed to cover a range of chemical interactions between the nanotubes and surrounding environment, ranging from van der Waals, through ionic to covalent bond formation. These studies will enable the interaction of single wall nanotubes and the local environment to be understood and predictions made regarding the behaviour of SWNT based electronic devices.
