Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of this research programme are:To synthesise and characterise two new temperature-responsive copolymers and investigate the interaction of these copolymers with anionic surfactant in solution. To (i) characterise two model latexes that differ in methacrylic acid content, (ii) adsorb the responsive copolymers onto the particle surfaces to yield temperature-responsive latexes and (iii) investigate the effect of solution pH and added anionic surfactant on the surface-polymer interactions and temperature-induced gelation. To (i) prepare and characterize temperature-responsive emulsions stabilised by the responsive copolymers and (ii) determine the role of the emulsion droplets in the temperature-induced gelation and (iii) elucidate the mechanism whereby high concentrations of added anionic surfactant prevents gelation.
