Ever since Cram's pioneering work on cyclophanes, there has been considerable interest in these molecules. Much of the earlier work focussed on smaller members of the class, but more recently, attention has turned to using cyclophanes of all sizes to study the effects of bringing different functional groups into close proximity. Cyclophanes are starting to be used in several areas of contemporary chemistry; in particular their stereochemical properties are fascinating, but not yet fully understood.A serendipitous synthesis of a [13,13] paracyclophane has prompted us to devise a new route to chiral cyclophanes. We wish to execute this synthesis, test its versatility and look at the co-ordination chemistry of the diverse structures thus generated. It is anticipated that some of the metal complexes synthesised will have catalytic properties and applications in asymmetric synthesis.
