Summary - Describe the proposed project in about 200 words, in plain EnglishThe Universities of Abertay and Dundee are joining with the Dundee Science Centre to produce an interactive experience to highlight the problems of people who are not able to speak and to illustrate how science can contribute to a solution. We propose to install an interactive exhibit at national science centres where anyone can experience conversation using a computer-based conversation aid. The exhibit is envisaged as a table with two computer-simulated people inviting visitors to join them in a third chair. The visitors must use a simplified communication aid to participate in the conversation. Next to the exhibit an information kiosk will offer a choice of films that provide more information on selected topics. The films will highlight the problems that non-speaking people experience when their communication system is inadequate and show how science has contributed to the development of a better computer-based communication aid. Films will include clips of non-speaking people conversing using the computer system together with expert commentary to explain how the conversation works.
