The aim of the project is to show flexible scheduling of network resources within the EU-DataGrid context using the GRID Resource Scheduling Environment (GSRE). The GSRE will be developed within the project and demonstrate flexible scheduling capability by providing controlled scheduling of network access (bandwidth scheduling) for many applications and processes, specifically for the data-intensive applications for the scientific disciplines identified for the EU-DataGrid (Particle Physics, Earth Observation and Biology/Bio-informatics). The GRSE will provide a scheduling mechanism that can adapt to its current execution environment, altering its operation across the network to a more suitable resource usage as necessary. We will also provide metrics and methodologies for evaluating the performance and appropriateness of scheduling policies that are used within the GRSE. During the execution of the application, there will be feedback from the GRID resources to the GRID applications via the GRSE. Some of this feedback will be dealt with directly by the GRSE. Some of the feedback may need actions from the application and/or the user(s). We will investigate the use of traditional and novel technqiues for the feedback control mechanisms and decision-making, e.g. standard control-theory coupled with the use of statistical methods, rule-based reasoning and polices, mathematical models, biological modelling, fuzzy logic, knowledge-based heuristics, etc. We will take a pragmatic approach to decide on our approach to specific problems within the scope of the project.
