Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will define an architecture for mobile computing middleware which aims to allow application awareness with respect to context, location device and environmental capabilities. Standard middleware technologies are based on the principle of transparency which, we claim, does not fit the context of mobile application as it prevents applications from being notified or involved in decisions concerning context or resource availability. In this project we plan to use reflection techniques and mobile code in the development of middleware targeted to mobile computing. Reflection is used to provide awareness and code mobility to allow adaptability to change and better resource exploitation.W e plan to test and evaluate the prototype we develop on a set of mobile computing case study applications in the areas of e-shopping and ad-hoc mage sharing and processing. The project will be carried on in the UCL-CS Software System Engineering group which has already developed substantial background research both in the areas of standard middleware and mobility. In addition, the project will build on the already tight collaboration with the UCL-CS network and multimedia group.
