We will establish a laboratory for high pressure-high temperature syntheses and studies of new solid state nitridebased materials, using laser-heated diamond anvil cell techniques coupled with laboratory-based vibrational (Raman) spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction for identification of new phases, in situ studies of their structures at high pressure, and their recoverability to ambient conditions. We will focus on the solid state chemistry of group IV and transition metal-containing nitrides, at high pressure and high temperature. Nitrides are important solids and technological materials, but their high pressure-high temperature structures and chemistry are not well known at present. We will focus our study on (a) new spinet-structured nitrides formed by group IV elements (Si, Ge, Sn, Ti), and (b) exploratory syntheses of potential transition metal (Fe, Mn, Mo, etc) nitridecontaining phases at high pressure. The laser heated diamond cell with NZ as a pressure-transmitting medium is ideal for exploratory nitride syntheses, and in situ studies of structure-property relations during compression and recovery. We expect that new solid state chemistry and physical behaviour will be identified, and new materials with high hardness, and useful electronic or optical properties, will result from the study.
