Various researchers have developed eddy current and magnetic sensing systems which can decouple two parameters eg distance and thickness, distance and material property etc. There have also been successful reports of two dimensional tomographic imaging using circular arrays of inductive sensors.The research suggested in this proposal involves combining both magnetic and inductive sensing techniques to produce a multi-sensor instrument which can measure the distance to a flat metal target to the same accuracy as commercial non-target independent sensors but does not require recalibrating each time the target changes, say due to temperature, component replacement, or set-up misalignment.The conceptual design will be produced using finite element modelling techniques. A prototype sensor head will then be manufactured and experiments carried out with different target configurations. A processing algorithm will then be developed to extract the distance measurement and assessed. A laboratory prototype system will then be constructed and its performance compared to commercial non-target independent distance measuring systems in terms of accuracy, repeatability, response time etc.
