Most chemical processing is profoundly influenced by interfacial phenomena. The efficiencies and reproducibilities of many processes are influenced by large uncertainties and variations in these interfacial properties which are, in turn, affected by impurities at trace levels (parts-per-million (ppm)). The ability to control interfacial characteristics would have wide- ranging implications both on quality control and on the economics of metals processing. This proposal seeks to carry out a fundamental study of interfacial phenomena to determine whether interfacial properties can be manipulated or controlled by use of one of the following (i) application of an electrical potential(ii) a high-sulphur graphite in the refractory(iii) Mg0 - saturated slags with Mg0/ C refractories.The knowledge gained from the fundamental studies will be used to overcome certain , current problems in steel and non-ferrous metal production, namely, factors affecting (1) the adhesion of slag-splashed linings (2) SEN clogging (3) inclusions originating from ladle glazes (4) inclusions arising from slag entrapment in both the continuous casting mould and in the vortex formed when a ladle is drained (5) excessive foaming when a vacuum is applied in the tank degasser. These applied studies will be carried out using laboratory experiments (X-ray Fluoroscopy and Confocal Laser Microscopy) simulation tests and plant trials.
