Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a collaborative research programme between Cranfield University, City University end a number of industrial collaborators. The primary aim of the proposal is the development of a generic fibre optic sensor system to enable structural integrity monitoring in harsh industrial environments. The contribution of Cranfield University in this proposal will be the design and development of sensor protection, packaging and attachment methods to specified structures and associated environments. The research programme is divided into three phases. Phase 1 will draw on edsting epertise on sensor packaging and protection in developing the performance requirements for this current proposal. This will be conducted whilst the sensor system is being developed at City University. Phase two will involve a detailed and critical laboratory-based assessment of the fibre optic strain and temperature unit developed by City. The final phase of the research will involve site trials at DERA and Corus.
