Summary on Grant Application Form
A proposal is made for an imaging X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) instrument. The spectrometer will underpin and create new opportunities in the following research areas in the collaborating departments; coatings (patterned self-assembled monolayers, SAM multilayers and SAM in semiconductor processing and fractography of adhesively bonded joints), interfacial chemistry (organic-aluminium oxide/hydroxide interactions and mineral biofilm interactions, corrosion inhibition and the interactions of scale inhibitors with mineral surfaces), surface engineering (surface modification for improved paint adhesion and performance, chemical vapour deposition, plasma treatment, fluorination and enzyme treatment of textile and fibre surfaces and anodising and anodic processes), process engineering and mineral surfaces (sorption of heavy metals by the surfaces of ultra fine particle mineral phases), degradation of materials (breakdown and weathering of silicate minerals and glasses phases) and catalysis (microporous materials).
