Knowledge of the relationship between microstructure and the macroscopic mechanical properties of a material is a prerequisite for modern material design. For example, in the case of heterogeneous materials like polymer composites many complex local microstructural phenomena underlie the (non-linear) macromechanical behaviour. Failusre in there materials is often the result of strain localisaiton, which may occur at a macro- as well as micro-level. The analyis of strain localisation phenomena and damage requires appropriate experimental techniques to verify the complex behaviour of heterogeneous materials at different length scales. This proposal aims to purchase a state-of-th-art 3D optical measurement system that measures local deformations using the grating method. The system can be used for a wide variety of materials and components at length scales ranging from microns up to macroscopic deformations in actual components. the optical measurement system will be used for a large number of ongoing research projects at Queen Mary. Examples of localisation phenomena in composite materails that will tackled in the different projects include matrix strain enhancement in transversely loaded composite laminates, the characterisation of stress concentrations and damage zones at notches and cracks-tips and the measurement of 3D deformations during thermoforming of composite laminates. Next to composite materials related projects the equipment will support many other existing programmes and greatly enhaces the scope of the mechanical characterisation facilities within Queen Mary.
