Summary on Grant Application Form
The main axis of our research is on techniques, algorithums and underlying theory for the solution of large-scale linear and nonlinear systems. This includes direct and preconditioned iterative methods for solving large sparse linear systems on both serial and parallel computers, exact penalty and interior-point approaches to general and linearly constrained optimization problems, and eigenproblem solution for symmetric and unsymmetric problems. We are also in the forefront of mathematical software development. Because the group offers a unique resource and from the remarks of the referees on an earlier (successful) grant proposal concerning te inappropriateness of the regular Grant mechanism for funding this group, we feel that the work of the group should be supported on a PROGRAMME GRANT rather than a regular research grant. There are futher remarks in support of this in our case for support
