Summary on Grant Application Form
Elastic Scatter-spectroscopy using fine optic fibres is a novel, inexpensive and minimally invasive technique with potential formonitoring tissue density and microarchitecture critical to tissue engineering and repair. Pilot studies have successfully monitored changes in collagen in a common tissue engineering model: fibroblast contracting collagen lattices. With the analysis of polarised light scatter, the influences of collagen density alignment will be evaluated in vitro, in whole tissues and in skin and tendon repair in vivo to identify characteristic signals associated with new tissue formation and integration. This has exciting potential for clinical monitoring tissue repair and tissue engineered constructs.
