The Internet is difficult to simulate because seemingly its topology and traffic is always changing. Any characteristics of the Internet that holds for a wide range of environments is extremely valuable as it can be used as a building block to simulate its behaviour. These special characteristics are known as Internet invariants and they are very poorly researched to date.The aim is to search for Internet invariants that capture the relevant features of its topology and traffic. The search of topological invariants is going to be done using the methods of Small-World theories. These methods were developed for the topological description of general networks. It is known that one of the Internet traffic invariants is its self-similarity and that the network topolgy and the traffic are dynamically coupled due to the routers and protocols. What is missing, apart from the topological invariants and this research is going to address, are the changes in the network characteristics and possible emergent behaviours of the Interntet due to the traffic-topology coupling. These emergent behaviours are very important for the dimensioning and management of the future Internet. The study of the traffic-topology coupling is going to be done using measurements of the Internet and by simulating networks that have the same invariant properties as the Internet.
