A series of time dependent optical measurements will be made on a range of luminescent polymers commonly used in polymeric light emitting devices, to determine the energies and dynamics of triplet excitons in these polymers and the various channels by which they decay. The properties to be studied are those which will have most bearing on the performance of such devices, especially the new generation of device which attempt to harvest triplet energy and turn it into light. The project aims to elucidate how far triplet excitons can move, at what rate, how they interact with themselves, singlet excitons and trapped space charges, that is, all those things present within a thin polymer film of a working device. With these results we aim to design better triplet harvesting polymer devices. In order to make many of these measurements a dedicated picosecond laser based spectrometer will be used. At its heart is a 200 ps gated intensified CCD detector which has a red enhanced phosphor. This is essential, as most polymers will have very weak phosphorescence (triplet emission) observable below 800 nm. Thus, such a specialised detection system has to be used to make these measurements.
