Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is a request for funding for travel that will allow resonant scattering x-ray experiments to be performed on a wide variety of liquid crystals in both device and thin film geometries. Resonant x-ray scattering is the only technique that probes the structures of antiferroelectric, ferrielectric and ferroelectric liquid crystal phases directly. The work is collaborative with academic and industrial (Bell Labs) groups from France and the USA. This international team is the only one world-wide carrying out these experiments, and the experiments performed have revolutionised models of ferrielectric sub-phases in liquid crystals. We have already been awarded beam time at 3 international facilities for the proposed experiments. The materials we will study are available under a separately funded EPSRC grant (GR/L76648) and our preliminary work in this area has already led to publication of an Applied Physics Letter. The experiments will investigate systems that contain sulfur or selenium as the resonant atoms, together with mixtures with materials that do not contain a resonant atom Electric-field studies will be performed on specially constructed devices containing selenium systems. thereby probing directly structural deformations that occur in these systems as a function of applied field.
