The aim of this project is to explore techniques capable of achieving steady-state Bose-Einstein consideration. The method proposed is to use a far-off resonance optical lattice to transport atoms from the laser cooling region to the magnetic trap. This technique combines a number of important features: First, atoms are transferred from the laser cooling region where a number and phase soace density are limited by near-resonant light, to the magnetic trap region where there is no resonant light and consequently no number or density limit. Second, by using an optical lattice to execute the transfer, the atoms remain trapped in all dimensions throughout which minimises the loss of phase space density.
