Summary on Grant Application Form
Resonant cavity (RC) effects will be used to harness the potential of specially bandstructure-engineered LED's, which emit in the 3 to 10 micron mid-IR wavelength range, in a programme tightly focussed on all-solid state mid-IR gas detection applications. Using grown-in optical resonators, the LED output spectrum will be narrowed in wavelength and angle and will be improved in external output efficiency. This will improve the LED specific brightness available for typical commercial gas-sensing optical systems by a factor of 22 and surpass the current perceived threshold for successful commercial exploitation.Similar improvements are sought in RC detectors, increasing the gas sensing detectivity by x 570. Resonant detector and emitter responses will be tailored directly to specific gas absorptions, obviating the need for expensive filtering and easing optical production tolerances.Close dialogues with SME's and end users will ensure that optimal paths to exploitation are chosen. The programme will also yield, for the first time, a reliable data base of optical properties of a range of III-V semiconductors and their alloys in the mid-IR range, and a flow of trained staff into the burgeoning UK opto-electronic device industry.
