It is now becoming possible to produce ultracold molecules in atom traps and carry out experiments on them. Such experiments open up a new range of physics. However, very little is known about collisions involving ultracold molecules; in particular, the molecules will be ejected from the trap if they undergo vibrationally or rotationally inelastic collisions. In this project, collisions between ultracold atoms and molecules will be investigated theoretically. A new version of the MOLSCAT package for inelastic scattering calculations, optimised for the ultralow-energy regime, will be produced. Inelastic collisions between alkali atoms and alkali dimers will be investigated. Cross sections will be calculated as a function of energy and diatom vibrational state, in order to determine how long molecules in different states can survive in a trap before they are ejected. The calculations will then be extended to consider reactive (atom exchange) collisions. The relative merits of time-dependent and time-independent approaches to reactive scattering at ultralow energies will be investigated.A
