Bistable nematic Uquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) combine many of the advantages of conventional twisted nematic LCDs with the ability to retain an image in the power-off state. Being rugged and having low power consumption, such displays have very high potential for becoming the technology of choice in high volume markets such as mobile phones, video games and camcorders, and in programmable smartcards. The aim of this proposal is to carry out research leading to the development of, and a detailed understanding of the interesting and diverse physics of novel bistable nematic LCDs. The main emphasis will be on the Zenithal Bistable nematic class of devices where this understanding has been lacking in previous work. An integrated experimental and theoretical approach will be taken that should also make possible the development of new devices and the optimisation of the electro-optical performance for display applications of both new and existing devices. Experimental probes will include both static and time resolved impedance, stroboscopic and optical diffraction pattern measurements along with surface evanescent wave studies. These will be combined with sophisticated simulations of the static and dynamic liquid crystal alignment configurations in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensions and with advanced optica1 modelling methods such as the wide-angle optical beam propagation technique.
